| 'Mulan' is Disney's best animated movie since 'The Lion King' (I'm excluding 'Toy Story' from this genre). Having said that, 'Mulan' is definitely a refreshing step back to what made Disney animation so great in the first place. While there are little quirks which detract from the credibility of the film (How did the almost all of the Hun army perish in the avalanche? And how did the remaining few sneak into the palace?), 'Mulan' is entertaining, inspiring, and well-produced. The animation is, in short, excellent, with a touch of the 'epic'-- take the palace, burned village, and avalanche scenes, for instance. And vivid drawings such as the cherry blossoms and the brush strokes which open 'Mulan,' combined with a great score, add to the definite 'Oriental' feel of the whole movie. Certain aspects of the film are pure Disney 'formula'-- the ever-present sidekicks (of whom there are many in this film- a definite plus for merchandising) and the songs interspersed throughout the movie. Which isn't to say that 'formula' isn't good-- 'Mulan' certainly achieves all of its goals in that respect. But having enjoyed 'Mulan' and its predecessors, it would be nice to see a 'serious' film from Disney for once, along the lines of 'The Prince of Egypt' (where are the sidekicks in that film?). I may be a little selfish in asking Disney to produce such a film. Admittedly, such a movie would be aimed toward an older audience and discourage the younger children who have traditionally flocked to Disney films. But originality is key, and if Disney can succeed in this respect, it can help dispel its "cute-Disney" stereotype and attract a larger older audience as well. | |

| YES !! Yesterday I finally watched the movie (we had to wait so long overhere in Holland)! I think the movie is great. I expected a movie like Pocahontas, but it turned out to be more a movie like Aladdin. Beautiful animation and fast like a Roller Coaster. There are only 2 points of critism. The Villian's part is too small. Disney movies need a very strong villian and I think Shan-Yu did not get the time he deserved (why is a Disney movie always 1,5 hour ???Too expensive to make ? I don't think so, they make a lot of money with them) The other thing is that I think the score was great ...but the songs are not that great.( I miss the songs like in The little Mermaid) But I think that if Disney is still making this kind of movies in the future they don't have to be affraid of the compatition | |

| The film is extraordinary. Mulan is stylized in vivid colors and textures and fluid animation. The story, based on a beautiful legend, has been "Disney-ized" for obvious purposes, but the emotions, as found in the well-known Mulan poems, are not water-downed. Though Captain Shang's character is a bit rough, it is minor -- as is his character. The true power here lies in the relationship between Mulan and her father. The cherry blossum scene is endearing and effective, which ties with the final scene between Mulan and her father (for those who have not seen the film... I won't give it away). The animation is top-notch evident to the avalanche scene and the beautiful palace scene. The characters are drawn with such details that hidden quirks can be found within each major character. Mulan, for example, plays with her hair often, while Yao has a tendency to raise his forearm in a defensive matter. Did I mention how seemingless the motion of the characters appear? Mulan's horse, surprisingly, moves like a horse, but with slight humanistic mannerisms (traditional Disney). Prince of Egypt, though beautifully drawn, has a problem with motions -- the stiff horse scene is horrendous. In Prince of Egypt's screening, the characters all move in a pedestrian fashion. Here, Mulan excels. Above all, Mulan is an interesting character. She raises the bar of all Disney animation in which how all heorines and heros alike should be portrayed. She fights to save her aging father from fighting, while searching honor for her and her family. There is not a better lesson for children than that -- unconditional love and sacrifice. You won't see any seashells or swooning for a prince in this film. Mulan has bigger and better things to aspire for... Overall, Mulan is thoroughly entertaining, powerful, and funny. It teaches an important lesson without becoming too preachy. Although Mulan does not take the Beauty and the Beast crown, it has a crown of its own. Afterall, Mulan is playing on a different field. | |

| Mulan's first half is brilliant and extremely funny (while also managing to establish the character and her bond to her father). What prevents it from getting a "10" from me is two dramaturgical weaknesses: 1. It doesn't tell the viewer why it's such a terrible crime for Mulan to have impersonated a man to join the army, and doesn't show enough emotional conflict in the Captain when he's supposed to execute her. 2. After the Huns have entered the city, the movies degenerates into an action-thriller which could just as well be about a bunch of terrorists out to asassinate the president. There is nothing original about the fight scenes in what should have been the dramatic peak of the movie. Other than that, and apart from not having any great songs, it's a marvellous movie, with some truly great animation. | |

| Mulan is finally out in France!! (that is, next wednesday!) I've just seen a preview showing of Mulan!!! This is one of the best of Disney's films, with The Lion King!!!! The bad guy is also one of the best I've ever seen, and best of all, HE DOES NOT SING!!!!!!!! yeaahh!!! I love this film!!!! | |

| Yesterday Mulan was premiered in my country - it certainly was a good movie. It has -at last again!- good humor spots and really this time Disney has turned a little more adult. (A very little!) The music does not have the weight it had before -though the songs and the score are very good, one of the best since Menken lost his spark-. After a little disappoint with Pocahontas and the awful The Lion King and the indescriptible Hercules -blergh- I expected another shit, but this rules! It is new and fresh and surprising. I've noticed also a step beyond on "sex" at Disney classics ---wow! naked shoulders! bath scenes! NAKED men suggested!! ooooh!--- some purists may be terrifyed. (Remember what happened to fire sequence of Esmeralda in The Hunchback). The only thing actually I disliked was the ending. Discordant to the rest of the movie, serious, it starts with that crap of song by chicken-band and the awful Stevie Wonder. But I assume that it is no perfect movie and I forgive this little stain. Mulan is very enjoyable!! Not as much as Beauty And The Beast and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, but almost!! | |

| Mulan was a great movie. Everyone should check it out if they have the chance to. By the way, Princess Kala, you are judging Mulan on wrong merits, rating a Disney cartoon on inaccuracies is ludicrous, if not plain foolish. I assume you like Lion King...? Hmm. Funny, the last time I heard animals 'talking' was in my sleep; and that was back in the days. Mulan does not look Chinese? What do Chinese people look like? Do you want a heavily stereotyped Chinese as the lead? I don't get it. Mulan, just like every other production, is universal. Lastly, being wimpy and not being able to fight well are two different things. A 'wimp' is defined as either weak or ineffective.' She was rather strong and effective, not to mention brave -- hell, would you stand up against a seven-foot man with a giant sword? | |

| I think this movie was awesome. It's my second favorite Disney movie, though not by very much. Mulan is well drawn, well written and both funny and serious at the same time. Kids and adults can both enjoy it, which is not the case with most "children's" movies. My rating: **** I love this movie. | |
