This is, if not the best, one of the best Disney animation I've ever seen. I have seen a lot. I almost have the whole collection of Disney animated videos. I always found many Disney protagonists lacking someting, but couldn't really define what it was until now. I am not saying those characters were bad, because I like them in their own way. I found Mulan had more spunk and tenacity than any other. I found her motivation for her actions more honorable then others (eg. The Little Mermaid). As for Captain Shang, what can I say - he is a dream. He's strong, honorable, brave and not threatened by a girl, a girl who can kick anyone's royal behind. I do not believe there were any faults with the portrayal of Chinese people. There were less stereotyping in that movie than many of the movies that actually comes out Asia. I found that I was relating to the character and seeing similarities in all the charaters' actions rather then seeing 'Oh they're stereotyping us'. One has to remember that the movie was made to please all audiences not just one particular group. The movie had the right mix. Mulan's story should be one where everyone can at least identify or relate to at a universal level. As for historical concerns, well, when did Disney ever had correct historical facts to the nil? If they did, there wouldn't be much of a movie. Oh yes, I am chinese myself if you haven't guessed. |

I think it's an excellent movie, in the way women are portrayed as perfectly capable individuas, and Mulan is an excellent role model for girls everywhere. She doesn't desperately need some Prince Charming. She kicks butt and saves the guys life. |

I think the movie is 10 because I have been waiting all my life for a Chinese movie from Disney World. And the animation is really cool! I also love the songs especially the song 'Fight for a woman'. |

Fantastic! Stupendous! Beautifully done! My god, what can I say? When I first heard of it, I expected Mulan to be really good, but it took my expectations and blew them away! It was... INDESCRIBABLE!!!
The music in Mulan simply kicks butt! I was at first disappointed that the great Alan Menken had not composed the score, but I'm VERY happy with Mulan's score! The music is charming, but some songs have... and EDGE that has never been used in Disney before! The intensity of "Make a Man Out of You" and the dramatic overture "Mulan's Decision" are totally new to the Disney screen, but it's FANTASTIC!!!
The CGI- wow! Drawing not just horses, but the men on them, plus the snow movement!!! Incredible!
And of course, the characters. I used to think Pocahontas was the coolest Disney heroine, but Mulan is three trillion times cooler!!! Man, she leaves her primping competition in the DUST! (No offense to the others... they're still cool! ^_^) She's got the cutest personality and kicks serious butt! (She fights!!! Watch out Magic Knights and Sailor Senshi!) She's beautiful and poised like the other heroines, but she's also got a fun, humorous side! And SHANG! Ooh! He's definitely the FINEST Disney guy!!! And he's by FAR the best warrior of the Disney clan! (Mwa ha! Take THAT Johnny boy!) Okay, I could go on and on, but just rest assured, they're all majorly cooL!
There's so much more I could say about Mulan, but I'll stop here. Go watch the movie to find all the other trillions of cool things about Disney's Masterpiece "Mulan." |

Wonderful...I could really relate to Mulan. Took my parents on Father's Day. So appropriate. According to Dad, Mulan's identity is not revealed until the Emperor holds a banquet in Ping's honor. "Ping" says he must change into something more appropriate and returns as Mulan in a dress. Also, Mulan was more of a tomboy, actually did some fighting. Nevertheless, I am quite pleased with the movie. Really outstanding endeavor. |

To Peter Lin,
You are wrong. I really don't see "Mulan" as a bad stereotype on Chinese culture. I am Chinese myself. I would rather watch Mulan than any of those crappy Jackie Chan or so-called "period-piece" Chinese martial arts drama where everyone can fight and fly. The men in the Mulan are not weak. The soldiers were not skilled because they were not martial artists -- just normal peasants drafted by the Imperial Army. Shang was a great captain in that he succeeded in training his make-shift troops; and most of all, he has heart. It wouldn't be dramatic if Mulan learned everything from his Dad (they did establish that Fa Zhou was a famous and honored soldier)... they have to show how "Mulan" transition from a girl to a woman. Disney does show that Mulan is courageous, and she knows her martial arts (she can kick Shang-Yu's butt!) but best of all, she defeated the enemy with smarts, not just chops and kicks.
Beside, Mulan is a legend. Nobody really knows exactly what happened. There are so many different versions.
As with the sexist stuff, I am sorry to say, but in feudal China (heck, even now) sexism is aplenty.
Most of all, "Mulan" is a Disney cartoon, not a Chinese culture documentary. I am so tired of people who want to be politically correct.

What can I say? Disney has done it again! Mulan is everything funny, cute, with suspense but yet it touches the important subject of women being as strong, smart and as good as men. The idea that millions of little girls and boys as well as grown-ups are watching this movie where the female is the hero and doesn't need a man to take care of her really leaves an impression on society! How wonderful and encoraging for every women and child. I loved it! |

great movie. but what really blew me away wa the villian. NEVER have i seen a villian as evil, cunning, cool, AND SMART as SHAN YU. too bad he is the newest villian, or he would be included in the villian's book, and i'd love to see more pics and info on him. |

The animation was seamless and very dramatic. The voice acting was good. The story sucked and really disturbed me.
Since the film is targeted at kids, the negative portrayals of chinese men and mulan will become part of their beliefs and opinions. Disney should have titled it, "Take a 3 week course in fireworks and you can kick butt." I am biased, because I am Chinese. Disney could have done more research into the Chinese Herione trope and atleast showed how courageous Mulan was and that her father had the love to teach her martial arts. She succeeded, because of her understanding of military strategy and martial arts.
Historically there were heriones, but Disney's Mulan doesn't exist. Will kids leave the movie with distorted ideas about Chinese culture? Yes. The movies and TV shows that I loved as a child contribute to who I am today. Will the negative stereotype of the weak Asian male and Geisha girl persist? Yes on that count too.
My recommendation, go see Mulan and then rent Wing Chung staring Michelle Yeoh and teach your children that everything in Mulan is a lie. This way they will grow with an understanding we have to learn to appreciate each other and work towards understanding the differences and similarities. This way we can make sure that directors and producers make intellegent, accurate movies that entertain.

Everything was perfect! It bested all the other Disney animated movies. I especially loved how Mulan was the one who ended the villain, unlike the other main female characters, who let the guy end the villian's strife. |

What can I say?? Mulan ROCKS!! Although I've seen it in French (NOOOO!!! -_-) it still kicked ass and Shan Yu is really the coolest villain ever from Disney! Everything in the movie except maybe the songs but they were in french so... I really loved the scenes of the Huns coming down the mountain and when all China bows down to Mulan. It should be rated 20/10 but this pull down thingie doesn't have a 20... |

Very good movie, Eddie Murphy was excellent! The only thing holding the movie back from greatness is the ending. The plot kind of unravels after the avalanch scene. Best Disney effort since "Lion King" |

Mulan is and always will be the best movie Disney has ever made. If I was a critic, I would give it a A+ because that's how good it was. Keep up the good work Disney, and don't forget to make a sequel ( part 2 of Mulan). Thank You! |

The movie is too short! Wow, what a beautiful, wonderful movie. I laughed so hard at times (e.g. the matchmaker scene, the skinny dipping scene, Mushu's wise cracks...), touched at others, and completely awed by the movie. At times I realized that I was watching a kidding movie (such as the cutesy animals, etc.) but it didn't bother me. I was so entertained. The art work was just marvelous. Yeah, I was awed by "Hunchback" also, but boy were those gargoyles annoying. In Mulan, everything fit nicely. I also like the end when Mulan finally won over Shang, not because she was simply beautiful, etc. but because of her courage, intelligence, and honor, and even though she liked Shang, she didn't "dream" of her prince charming to rescue her; in fact, she rescued and saved his life, twice! |

I never thought I'd live to see 'Beauty and the Beast' knocked off it's pedastal, but 'Mulan' did it. It's the greater emphasis on character and storytelling that really pulls things together, although the absence of talking animals (well, dragons aren't _really_ animals), and campy villan songs helps tremendously. The animation was completely spectacular, completely seamless, (unlike some other recent movies I could mention), but it was the appeal of the story that really did it.Congatulations, Disney, you're back in business! |
