"Probably the BEST Disney film ever made. This one has everything; drama, action, suspense, thriller and most importantly comedy relief. (And Mulan has a mother and a father.) Be looking for Oscar next year. This movie is just well put together and it draws you in till the very end!"

I like Mulan when she was saving the emperor
and when she saved the army when the HUNs
attacked them.

I liked her bravery. The music was great.

Disney breaks its mold with this one, and what results is one well balanced, enjoyable and uplifting film. Mulan, the hero/ine, is a multi-faceted gem -- intricate in characterization, and possesses exquisitie strength and beauty. Her sidekick Mushu provides fun and frenzy without being obtrusive, unlike the sidekicks of recent Disney films. The score is impressive, songs are good (albeit too short in some instances, too long in some), and the plot satisfies. If you're looking for a good flick, see this one.

I've become worried with the recent trend in Disney animated features. I don't mean the general trend that's been going on since "Snow White" : heroine or hero, usually missing one or more parents, longs for something more out of life and is assisted to this end by cute animal sidekicks and the occassional supernatural being. I mean the growing serious, dour tone of the films, meant to appeal to adult audiences, I suppose. I find this irritating. It creates uninteresting, "mature" characters, often drawn as if they had a pole up the posterior, and seems to destroy the writer's ability to make decent plot and dialogue. The films I'm specifically speaking of are Pocohontas
(a sad waste of celluloid) and Hunchback (better, but still lacking). There was a short, wonderful reprieve from all this moodiness in
"Hercules", but when I found out about "Mulan" (AH HA! The topic of this review has FINALLY come up!) I lost hope again.

Well, was I blown away! I remember watching "The Lion King" for the first time and going "WOW!". "Mulan" wasn't really a "WOW!" as much as it was a "OOOH!".
Not that the experience wasn't as good, it was just more subtle. "Mulan" is the kind of
"mature" film the Disney animators should have been working on all along. It's light on the music (thank you!) and keeps itself far enough away from the magical mumbo jumbo of the earlier films to be believable as
an adult-driven story (Pocohontas could have been saved if only they didn't have the fake Native-American magic crap and that damn talking tree). Still, "Mulan" appeals to the kiddies by including the traditional animal sidekicks, who amuse and entertain without becoming irritating. In fact, everything in "Mulan" appeals to both the infantile and the sophisticated viewer. This is a difficult balance to achieve, one which Disney struggles with all the time.

They've succeded before as brillantly as they do here, but never have they stretched their characters to such limits. 'Mulan" has a special, human touch to its storytelling that I've never seen in an American animated film before. The story isn't centered around fantasy, but on the relationships of people and how they work to achieve a goal together. The other recent Disney films I've mentioned have also tried this, but got lost in musical numbers, comic-relief creatures,
and gaudy special effects.

Also, "Mulan" is delicately beautiful and breath-taking in its design. Charming and poetic, it creates an exotic and engaging atmosphere. What surprised me most about
"Mulan" were the villains. The Huns appeared at first to be villains of the generic, dark-clad, evil stock without any personality, but the story revealed them to be cunning, relentless, and efficient in their
methods. One almost felt admiration for them.

If it isn't obvious, I really liked this movie. I pray that Disney keeps hitting the mark as close as they have here. Poc and Hunch really had me worried, but Herc and Mulan are restoring my hope that the the Disney cartoon money-making factory will again deserve its reputation as America's
best animation studio.

"Beauty and the Beast" WAS my favorite movie until I saw "Mulan". The thought of a female hero, great songs, and funny sidekicks is what caught my attention. I think this film is not only great for entertaining kids of all ages, but also a lesson in morals. This film is a big step in teaching people that females can be heros too. (Besides, Eddie Murphie's one of the best comedians around!!)

I highly recommend Mulan, the new Walt Disney animated movie. During the Middle Kingdom of China's history, a young woman, Mulan, has to choose between doing honor to her family's name or saving her father's life. She chooses to save her father, with the probability of disgracing the sacred family name, losing her father's love and facing execution for treason. Throughout the movie, we see a young woman, disguised as a soldier, trying to regain her father's love by helping the Chinese army to defeat invaders, while challenging male chauvinistic concepts of femininity. In the end, when the father has to choose between honor and his daughter, he tosses honor on the ground. (What he tosses on the ground and what she had to do to earn it, I leave for the viewer to discover.)

Stylistically, the animation is typical Disney, in that it accentuates each character's movements and neglects any kind of modeling, such as chiaroscuro. The result is that Disney's characters effortlessly move through space, but they look very flat in appearance. There are also some wonderfully planned compositions. For instance, I remember a beautiful scene in which Mulan and her father are sitting on a bench under a Cherry Blossom tree. Whoever drew the scene positioned the tree and its branches in such a way as to frame the sitting daughter and father, accenting their importance in the scene. Wonderful!

Even though the movie does have its faults, I left the theater smiling and filled with energy.

After the Lion King, I pretty much didn't care about Disney's animated films anymore. Pocahontas was bad in my opinion, so I didn't bother to watch the Hunchback of Notre Dame, or Hercules. But Mulan had a great story to it and the movie was incredible.

The drawings were a lot more impressive than in any of Disney's other movies. Though the beginning had some songs I wasn't too fond of, the rest of the movie was great. I especially enjoyed the songs and Mulan's personality itself. The movie had a great antagonist and the little "guardian" dragon was really funny. In fact, this is probably the most comical Disney animated film I've ever seen.

I might even say that this movie was better than the Truman Show, but it's a tough decision. This summer is packed with great movies already, including the upcoming Armmagedon (did I spell it right?) that I really want to see. If you plan on seeing something soon, Mulan is highly recommended.

"I am totally, utterly speechless (yes that good). Well....maybe I can sneak in a few thoughts...I just got back from seeing Disney's Mulan, it is truly thee ULTIMATE summer movie! I'm inlove, this has got to be my favorite movie ever! It totally blew
my mind! Have no fear, I am not hyping it up (ok, maybe just a little), but no matter what I tell you, this movie is gonna just blow you away! (if it doesn't, we better have a little talk, j/k!). This movie is hilarious!!!!!!! Totally, Mushu: this lil scene stealer
has got it going on! Grandmother Fa is one awesome babe, she is sooooo cute and hilarious! Captain Li Shang: man, this dude is fine! Fa Zhou: Mulan's dad, you gotta love him! Little Brother is such a cutie patutie! And of course there's Mulan! You'll fall
inlove with her character instantly, selfless, loving, heroic! Mulan is totally funny (keep your eyes open for the scenes where she tries to act all manly, cause she fails terribly......sooo funny!) A great scene to look out for is the "I'll make a man out of you" music number, that was way cool! The scenes in the movie are also very dramatic and tear wrenching so brace yourselves peeple! Wished it didn't have to end....but not to worry, I will see it again and again....."

I enjoyed the movie very much. However, part of the story was being modified, if not i would have voted it 10/10. Fa Mulan was supposed to be able to fight as she learned kung fu from her father who used to be a general.
When the Han's attacked China, the emperor sent for Mulan's father (who had already retired from the army) to fight the war. Seeing that her father was already so old, Mulan couldn't bare to let her father go to the war. So she finally decided to disguise as a man to "take over her father's place" and went for the battle.

Mulan. Well...don't take my word for it, take the word of an entire audience of about 500 kids and adults. Everybody seemed to enjoy it. People laughed and cheered during the movie and applauded afterwards. If you have kids, a definite 10 to bring them; they'll have a good time.
I went with two of my nieces as a treat on the day after their high school graduation (dinner and couple of movies). They enjoyed the movie and some of the songs.

Now for my two bits:
I own all the movies on video tape, all the way from Little Mermaid (the original) and up. Mulan is the only one I have decided to buy the laser disc. Not because I think it is the best out of all, but because of other reasons. I have known the Chinese poem, same one posted on the Disney website, for more than 20 years and am glad Disney picked this legend among others. This is a good story for the modern times even though it is some 2000 years old. I like the artwork as it does reminds me of traditional Chinese art. The impressions that I get from the characters are true and geniune to me, speaking as a person with a lot of old Chinese traditions engrained. While the songs as a whole are not as good, or as plenty, as previous films (but I like "I'll make a man old of you" a lot), one must know that, unlike Beauty & the Beast, this is not done in a form of a musical. The Chinese have a lot of musical and poetical history, but not as much in putting the two together. The closest thing you can get is Chinese Opera; so I was not disappointed with having less songs. But the scores do have a Chinese flavor to me. The songs were well-placed, I especially like how "A Girl Worth Fighting For" builds you up and then...(don't want to spoil the movie). I don't have kids yet but I certainly want to have a good copy of the movie later when I do so I'm buying the disc.

Comments about what I have read here:
It would not be impossible for the Emperor to bow to non-royalty, albeit unlikely. History are constantly being debating as to how Emperors were like. There is often multiple views about the same Emperor. Some Emperors are believed to have dawned peasant clothing and lived amongst peasants to better understand and help them. In that regards, the same kind of emperor might tip his head (note that he did not bow to the ground like the rest) to someone who had saved China, stood by her own principals despite of what the Chinese culture believes, and changed the role of a woman. It is hard to say because Mulan is a legend and I believe no one had actually done what was described.
What I believe the importance of having a son is the preservation of the family name. When a daughter marries, she becomes a part of the husband's family and loses her family (last) name. With a son, the last name is passed on to the next generation. The son and his family will also stay to tend to the running of the household while the daugther will leave. This was the mentality back then.

Interesting fact:
The name Fa Mulan is a beautiful name. The last name Fa means flower. Mu means wood. And Lan means Orchid.
Even though the name seems like a made-up one, it is possible Mulan was a real person and the legend might be true. Chinese names are often poetic and can have deep meanings themselves.

Final thoughts:
Movies are for fun. They are not documentaries and not suppose to always follow true history. One must worry only if the movie portraits in a wrong-negative manner, and be more forgiving if it is a wrong-positive manner. I, my nieces, and all the people in the theater certainly had fun last night at opening night. Go see it and decide for yourself!

Mulan is, by far, the best animated movie, no, the best MOVIE, I have seen in a very long time. The animation blew me away, the story flowed nicely, the humor never seemed out of place and actually made me laugh not groan. There's only one thing I didn't like:

I can't go see it again today!!

If you haven't seen it, see it! Skip the X-Files, skip Godzilla, skip the action packed "blockbusters" and see this movie!! You'll get more for your $7.50.

Last note: Shoulda been PG. I can't believe they got away with a G without having pulled major strings.

I absolutely loved this movie. In fact, I couldn't believe it when I read the New York Times review, which blew it off as another Disney formula movie. Aside from the sidekicks (which weren't nearly as obtrusive as everyone said they were), the story was unlike anything Disney's done and extremely well written. I don't care what anyone says, Mushu added alot to the movie and didn't stick out any more than the genie stuck out in Aladdin. An especially big nod for the bathing scene....it was totally unexpected and it had me in stitches. My only gripe was the synthesizer music when mulan decides to take her father's place. It seemed totally out of place and I have to wonder why they didn't use the music that is on the soundtrack or the music from the trailers, for that matter. Otherwise, a GREAT film that I will definately be watching again soon.

I dragged my older brother along to watch Mulan for the second time today. This time I got a better opportunity to listen to the songs and admire the animation. The first time I was too engrossed with the plot! A fabulous masterpiece -- probably one of the best Disney classics in a long time.

After going through a couple of the other reviews on this page, here's what I thought of the movie:
Excellent character development. On the serious characters, anyway; the comic character's don't do much but be silly, but who cares? That's what they're there for, and they do a good job at it.
I don't know too much about ancient China, so I can't nitpick.
The music - well, contrary to a lot of other opinions, I enjoyed the music (I also love the music from The Lion King, which - when it came out - everyone said was awful). My only disappointment about the songs is that they aren't more like what I had expected, which is "Balls Under the Red Flag" type music (I do NOT know if that's the band, the album or a bad translation. Everything else on that CD is in chinese), which is a Hong-Kong based rock band (or was once) that utilizes Chinese instruments and music in their rock songs for a very beautiful combination. That's my major gripe, but I liked them anyway.
I'm not sure why they made the Huns monsters, but maybe it's because they're not making a point about evil and beauty like they did with the extremely handsome and very evil Beauty and the Beast villain Gaston. But it seems to me a bit. . . much.
But all these things aside, I think this is the best thing to come out of Disney since The Lion King; perhaps the best thing to come out of the box office this summer that's not all schmalzy love-stories, brainless CGI disasters, or Titanic hold-overs, but for that part we'll have to wait and see.

in response to WeiQi - Not all Caucasians look like Ariel! And for everyone else who enjoys historical nit pick- The Great Wall did not look like it does today until it was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty (about 500 years ago, not 2000). In addition, in the original Mulan story, China does not exist as an empire yet (thus, no emperor), and the several nations of China were involved in a war with each other, not the huns, mongols, manchus, or any other northern invader (although there were skirmishes). I guess that civil war can not be as easily 'legitimized' as a war against an evil yellow eyed invader. - HOWEVER, its a good film, meant to be taken at face value, no deeper.
