This was an excellent movie, much better than any other of the Disney movies.
Even though everything was superb (great to
pick Lea Salonga and Donnie Osmond for singing voices) except for 2 things:
Mushu the Dragon would sometimes wisecrack
when it would be inappropriate (i.e. when
the army discovered she was a boy) and
they called the bad guys Huns!! The Huns
didn't invade China, but the Mongols did!
I know that Disney meant for them to be Mongolian soldiers, but they slipped on the
name.

I just saw the movie "Mulan" and I thought it was very good. I especially enjoyed a Disney movie that was well diversified in content. I enjoy all Disney films and the only thing that might deter parents from letting their children see "Mulan" would be because of violent content. I do realize, however, that it was the basis of the main point of the movie. Excellent. I would definitely see it again.

I saw Mulan last night (it's opening night), and I was surprised how packed the theatres were. When the movie began, however, all of the long lines and waiting was worth it. It was Disney's best full legnth animated feature to date, and I stand behind that by recommending this movie to everyone I know. In fact, I plan on seeing it again soon, a big change from my blase attitude before seeing it. 4 stars from me, but don't take my word for it. . .

Because I love Disney animation and Mulan is a reflection of my background, I've been waiting for it's release since early 1997. Usually when I expect too much of a film, it turns out to be a disappointment. But this was not the case with Mulan. The animation is stunning. Especially the background. The Great Wall and the Forbidden City almost looked realistic. The attack of the Huns was a visual spectacle.

Mushu was a great sidekick but I felt that the film on the whole is too comical. If there were more dramatic elements, it would've been much better.

I have learned not to expect too much accuracy in it's cultural aspects. I agree with previous posts that the Emperor would never bow to Mulan no matter what she did.

I was a bit disappointed in the songs. They were better than Hercules but still lacked the Oscar quality heard from the features from the early 90s (e.g. Beauty and the Beast, Alladin). But I loved Reflection. Overall, I was very impressed. Disney's best since Beauty and the Beast.

As a father of three and a freelance cartoonist, I am always interested in the next Disney epic. When I first heard of Mulan, it did not stir my interest, nor my wifes. In fact, my two boys were not peeked in the least. My daughter, Christina was excited that the next Disney movie came out on her 9th birthday, June 19th. And therefor thought it a prophecy.
So, I took the afternoon of work, grabbed a copy of Entertainment Weekly, checked the review for reference and hauled the family off to the theatre. It was five minutes into the opening that we sat entranced. Mulan was more than just another Disney doll to purchase at the local Target store. She has spunk and diligence and honor. We quickly surmised that we were wrong. (And we should have learned our lesson when we scoffed at the prospect of Disney making a movie of Alladin). Who knew?
So yes, parents, it is a great movie. My family rated it a 10. Even the skeptical boys, who found Mushu the dragon right up their alley. I gave it an 8. It was visually arresting, the story was fast and quick, the plot was a johnny one note, BUT this movie is for the kids. There is far worse fare out there. At least Christina did not want to see "Meet the Deedles" or "Mr. Magoo". I fear even an open-minded father would have steered the rudder away from those brain-barren beaches.
So it is to her tenacity that we again have enriched the spoils of the Disney empire and happily, felt we came out even.

Mulan rates as one of the best movies in recent Disney history. After so-so films such as Pocahontas, and Hercules, this movie shows much needed class and thought.

I really liked the added dimensions of Mulan. She wasn't quite the "Same Old Heroine", and neither was she too boyish. Instead, the character development unfolded nicely, although maybe a little too hurriedly. The scene where Mulan cuts off her hair could have been done a little more dramatically in my opinion. Still there was excellent development of Mulan.

One of the things I felt they could have done was eliminate the ancestors scene. It was important, in explaining the reason behind Mushu entering the film, but I found it almost trite. In addition, the ancestors were another reason to add that rock and roll music, ick. Not to say I don't like rock music (I love it), but it was out of place.

Eddy Murphy, as Mushu, added good comic relief. There hasn't been a Disney character like him since Robin William's Genie. However, I would have preferred to see a less humorous, more dramatic Mulan without the comic relief. It would have been interesting and exciting to see Disney create a full length animated drama, instead of resorting to comic relief.

The songs were not quite as memorable as I would have liked, but they were adequate. They fit the movie quite well, and added interesting irony. However, the songs didn't have the punch like "Part Of Your World", "A Whole New World", "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)". "Reflections" was the closest song to capture that Disney Music magic. Jerry Goldsmith's score was fantastic, as memorable as The Secret of NIMH for me.

What gave Mulan such charm was the unexpected twists and ironies. The training of the soldiers was interesting and unhurried. The washing scene was fabulously done (a bathing in a Disney film, wow!). I didn't want the movie to end, despite some of its flaws. Mulan was well voiced by Ming Na Wen (woooh!). I had fears, coming from the trailers, that her voice would seem out of place. On the contrary, I never did feel that the voice acting was unrealistic.

Overall, after some of the rehashing of Disney's previous movies, Mulan shines as an enjoyable and interesting crowd pleaser. It's different, although packaged under the same Disney formula. I suggest it as a must see for Disney and movie fans.

Wow!!! This movie was really great!!
In fact , it was the best movie i EVER SEEN!!!
The story was so nice and so complete that i watched it 4 TIMES!!!!
Then, i got sick of it.
Hehe!

But auctually, its a superb movie although the music really sucks and Shang Yu just pops out of the snow AFTER AN AVALANCHE!!!!

Maybe if someone like James Horner did the music it would be really fun!! Its a masterpiece!! I thought anastasia was nice but after this..... its nothing compared to MULAN!!!

The really fun part of the show comes with all 2000 huns on horse back charging down the snow covered mountain. Although when Shang Yu first appears, it seems like he only has a few batalions behind him. But the beautiful part is when the hun troops all merge out from the mountain top looking merciless and indestructible!!

The real beautiful parts(graphics) are when MuLan relises its up to her to take the place of her father, cuts her hair and all, when Shang found out his father's army was totally annihlated and when all the chinese bow down to MuLan near the ending.

If you havent seen this yet, YOU BETTER SEE THIS SHOW OR ELSE YOURE GONA REGRET IT FOR A VERY LONG TIME!

MuLan rules!!!!!!!

The movie is good. I read the story in Chinese about 5 years ago. I thought it was only a story talks about what a good daughter
Mulan was back that time. Never thought she could read and ride. You know, it is not good for a woman to learn how to write. She must be a special one back then. By the way,
they didn't explain one thing very clear, that is the Chinese don't allow woman in the army back then because they think that woman will bring bad luck to them. One man in every family must serve the army! I bet that is why Chinese want boys. The family with no son won't last long, not everyone will come back from the war. If Mulan's father went to the war, the family is doomed because farm need people to take care.
Said too much, one last thing: the songs in the movies is not very good. People are not use to listen to Chinese music. So they added little rock and roll in the end.

Overall, this movie was pretty good. I didn't like the songs though. (Where did Alan Menken and Tim Rice go?) Some of the scores were good enough to make me want to get the soundtrack. The leader of the Huns is the coolest looking Disney villain. Love his evil eyes. The art was wonderful. I really like how Disney gives each animated film a different style. Enjoy the show!

I was hoping for more, but didn't receive it. I was actually embarrassed by the film. Technically, it was nicely done, and the scenes of warfare in the snow I thought best of all. But I got nothing from the songs; they just didn't have the emotional impact to stand alone and be memorable like those from "Beauty and the Beast". Plot development similarly left me cold; there was no suspense to the film, only a sequence of scenes that gave the characters things to say and do, but no real predictable direction. I never found myself really caring about the characters (except that I wanted the silly dragon to disappear; and the cricket contributed nothing at all). Actually, of all the characters, I thought Mulan's father and the Hun leader were the most memorable; they were people of substance who were quite intelligent and understood life. (No, the Hun leader wasn't a monster; he was a cunning and knowledgeable wolf, quite a survivor.) I wouldn't see this film again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. Heck, after this, I might even enjoy seeing Black Cauldron (if it were uncut).

And just so you don't think I'm down on Disney, let me tell you that I really enjoyed and love to watch "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast", and am really fond of "The Secret of NIMH". Jerry Goldsmith's score for NIMH was really great, far better than his work for Mulan. Go watch those films and then watch Mulan; you'll see the difference.

How much did I like this movie? I'll tell ya. I liked it so much, I saw it twice. That's right. I saw it TWO times on opening day. I was fab!

Mulan was a very different heroine; while noble and brave, she's also get a great sense of humor. Mushu (thank you, Mr. Murphy) was hilarious. Crik-ee was adorable. Kahn was proud and true. The Gang of Three were fab. Shang was actually three dimensional. And he's the love interest. Now THAT was a surprise. And, finally, Shang Yu was very intimidating.

People who nick-pick at the details fail to see the point. `Mulan' is made to entertain, not to be analyzed.

My fave thing, the part of the movie that made me really enjoy it: How they put Mulan and Shang together at the end. It's so sweet (and very funny thanks to Grandmother Fa).

Go see this movie!

Very entertaining on the whole.
A good story accompanied by good songs and scores really makes this Disney Cartoon stand out from the rest. How ever i would like to comment on one minor misconceptions of chinese ancestral tablets at the home of Mulan. they are made of ... umm.. stone or metal ( they seem shiny in one scene )...

Anyway the real thing is made of wood.

uummm...
also the emperor will not bow to a girl.....

BUt i am sure these are only a small errors.... i liked the show throughly.

I'm sure everyone has heard of by now of the latest Disney animated movie, Mulan. I'll make this movie as short as possible. Mulan is based on the ancient story of a girl who takes her father's place in the Chinese army when the barbarians invade China.

When I first saw the preview for Mulan, I thought it might be the best animated movie ever. It looked like a serious movie, not one with stupid jokes and immature feats. Turns out that Disney did a good job lying. They didnt' release the previews with the Eddie Murphy dragon character, Mushu, until just the past few weeks. Which really makes me gripe.

Disney did a great job animating the movie and the best scene in the entire movie has to be when the Huns charge across the snow covered mountain, all 2,000 of them captured on the film, much more with awe than the Wildebeast charge in the Lion King.

This movie isn't so childish either. It's got more of a mature theme, different from those sorry excuses for a movie like Hercules and Pocahontas. Maybe i jsut liked it because of the fight sequences or the evil, very evil Hun leader, Shang Yu. Anyways, this movie could have been near perfect if there had not been so many comical scenes, especially with Eddie Murphy's dragon character. It really did not need the humor, nor for those poorly written song. Disney, understand, a good animated movie does not need songs! Geez....Mulan was this close to getting four stars from me

Disney has redeemed themselves, since "Hercules" I enjoyed the animations several scenes were so good they almost seemed real. The music was good but we haven't heard really good music since the Lion King, is Disney trying to get a movie (Cartoon) out every summer and the quality of the music is hurting in the rush?? Still in all it was very GOOD.

I liked it. The plot moves along quickly without any real slow or "dead" time with nothing of any importance happening in the film. Mushu is amusing, and Mulan is noble. I especially liked how a sense of the Orient was evoked through the music and scenery. However, I can't remember a single song. Other Disney "classic" films have always left the memory of one song in my mind. This is not a put down or a complaint, just an opinion.
