Animated autos retained the pole position as "Cars" came in No. 1 at the box office for a second weekend with $31.2 million, holding off the wrestling comedy "Nacho Libre" and another car tale, "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift."

"Cars," from Disney and Pixar, beat a rush of new movies, lifting its 10-day domestic total to $114.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

'Cars' races into a $62.8 million weekend drive

The animated comedy "Cars" raced to first place at the weekend box office with a $62.8 million debut, maintaining the Disney-Pixar cartoon brand's undefeated record with a seventh straight hit.

If the numbers hold when final figures come out Monday, "Cars" would have the third-best opening in the Disney-Pixar cartoon series, just ahead of "Monsters, Inc." but behind "The Incredibles" and "Finding Nemo," which both debuted at about $70 million.

Still, it was the first time since the partnership began with 1995's "Toy Story" that a Disney-Pixar film did not gross more than its predecessor over opening weekend.

At least 30,000 people are expected to turn out for the premiere of Disney/Pixar's Cars at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC on May 26, according to the JimHillMedia.com website. The website, which tracks the activities of the Disney company, said that the event is already nearly a sell-out. All tickets are being sold at $10 with no reserved seating, the website said. It posted pictures of Turn 2 of the speedway, where four screens, 50x115 feet, will be erected. Local promoters maintain that it will be the biggest premiere in Disney's history.

Disney's Cars Movie Synopsis

Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson), a hotshot rookie racecar driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. En route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the town's offbeat characters - including Sally (a snazzy 2002 Porsche voiced by Bonnie Hunt), Doc Hudson (a 1951 Hudson Hornet with a mysterious past, voiced by Paul Newman), and Mater (a rusty but trusty tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) - who help him realize that there are more important things than trophies, fame and sponsorship.

Scott Weinberg writes: "The Hollywood Reporter brings us up-to-date on a handful of release shifts. Basically, Disney & Pixar decided to hold their "Cars" until the summer of 2006, which means a prime spot of Novermber real estate was (briefly) up for grabs.
The Mouse House opted to move their non-Pixar CG feature "Chicken Little" into the early November spot, and Columbia Pictures promptly followed suit by bumping "The Legend of Zorro" a few weeks back to take advantage of the vacancy. Not even New Year's and already we're worrying about November? Well, it's never too early to claim a primo release date!"
